I didn’t know why I felt so self-conscious as I walked through the wide double doors to the university library, but I couldn’t help glancing over my shoulder, feeling watched, as though at any moment Nina and Will would pop out from behind a pillar and confront me, demand to know what I was doing here. It was silly. They were still safely out of the way in France, and besides, even if they could see me now, they’d have no idea what I’d come for. I was only half sure myself. I cringed at the thought of having to borrow the book, wondering what the librarian would think of me, resenting the fact that I no longer had the disposable income I’d once taken for granted to buy it outright and have it discreetly delivered to my home. Or better yet, have a fucking internet connection so I could just google my answers.

When I’d moved into the flat, I’d had no money to spare for such luxuries, and though being a surrogate had eased my financial worries somewhat, I’d grown so used to being cut off from the world of social media and news streams that I’d yet to change that. It was only now that I was realising what an inconvenience I’d created for myself. But as embarrassed and jumpy as I was, I needed to push on and find some answers.

I’d blindly signed that contract. I’d felt so detached, so desperate to make the right choice, that I’d let them guide me down the path they wanted me to take. But looking over it after Nina’s outburst, it had been as if I’d seen the insanity of what I’d agreed to for the first time. The daily in-person visits. The consent for them to touch my belly, seemingly whenever they felt the urge. If they’d known in advance how their family situation would pan out, I had no doubt there would have been a section about accompanying them abroad if required – and judging by Nina’s furious reaction at my refusal to drop everything and go, I would have bet good money on their regret that it hadn’t been included. I wondered if they were talking to their lawyers at this very moment.

My relationship with the couple was nothing like I’d envisioned. I’d seen the way the other surrogates in the group were treated like family members by their intended parents. Taken care of, loved, included but never commanded. It had started out like that for us too. But it seemed that the more I tried to assert myself, the more the mask dropped. Now they treated me like an employee, someone they’d assigned a job to, making it clear they were less than pleased with my performance. It was my own fault. I’d bent over too much, too often, showed them that they could treat me with cool disregard for my needs and still get what they wanted from me. They thought I was a pushover, and it couldn’t go on.
